Narwhals v Flat Caps
The Flat Caps GS set sail from Dublin to Holyhead on Monday morning 8th September 2025 for the return fixture after last year's inaugural match on the Emerald Isle.
The afternoon presented fair weather at Conwy and, despite travelling, the honours in the first match ended even at 2-2. It was good to see fellow Narwhal Roger Jones greeting the players in the clubhouse and this practice is to be encouraged for any home matches.
A beautiful evening meal followed in a private room in The Castle Hotel, Conwy where our President and Captain warmly welcomed our guests and Harry Collier, The Flat Caps President, responded by explaining how they had formed a society in 2018 from the four Dublin courses, Portmarnock, Royal Dublin, Baltray, County Louth and The Island courses.
Tuesday morning meant a leisurely drive along the Cambrian View to Harlech as the Maentwrog Road was closed for repairs.
Alas, Eric Howells was unwell and could not travel, leaving Guto Lewis to attempt his match single handedly against Shane Santry & John Champion, and despite a noble fight, the Flat Caps drew first blood in Harlech. There were some close matches and many stories shared of triumphs and disasters which are hidden in the match results detailed below. The closeness and camaraderie between the two Societies was evident throughout the match on and off the course.
So, against a relatively new society, who very rarely lose in their preferred handicap match format, The Narwhals triumphed 5-3.
Our Captain gave a memorable speech in Royal St David's GC Spike Bar with our resident Tusk and Golfing Historian, Richard Fisher overseeing proceedings before we travelled back to The Erskine Arms in Conwy for a casual social to round off the engagement with our Irish friends.
Excellent relationships have been made and we look forward to a bi-annual match arrangement with The Flat Caps moving forward.
